Carved from a singular piece of watercolored River Kahikatea, this tray captures the organic beauty of time-worn timber, its grain flowing like brushstrokes across the surface.
Centuries of submersion have imbued this piece with a ashy streaks throughout the beautiful golden grain Kahikatea is known for.
At its heart, an intricate 105-piece geometric inlay brings together a rare collection of river-recovered native timbers—Northern Rata, Matai, Puriri, Totara, and Kahikatea. Each individual piece is hand-cut and precisely fitted, forming a striking illusion of depth and movement.
Together they tell a story of resilience and transformation, their rich variations in color and texture reflecting the landscapes they once belonged to.
Both functional and sculptural, it is a one-of-one piece, a seamless balance of artistry and nature that honours the past while serving a purpose in the present and future.
